RESPONSIBLE TO: Assomption Conservation Coordinator
LOCATION: Assomption Island with occasional support duties on Mahé and Aldabra
HOURS OF WORK: 37.5 hours per week (expected to work overtime)
(including weekends and public holidays as required by field schedule)
CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND
The Assomption Conservation Officer (CO) will support SIF’s biosecurity and environmental management of Assomption Island throughout the construction and future operation of the hotel development.
The main duties of the CO are as follows, to support the Assomption Conservation Coordinator in: (1) ensuring the effective implementation of the Assomption Biosecurity Management Plan, including ongoing regulatory monitoring, coordination with stakeholders, and collecting scientific data throughout the development; and (2) ensuring that all phases of the project comply with the approved Environmental and Social Management Plan, as well as the conditions outlined in the Notice of Acceptance of the approved Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.
The CO will report operationally to SIF’s Assomption Conservation Coordinator. The primary duties are listed below, but they are not all-inclusive, as there may be unplanned duties that are impossible to predict or describe here and may change over time.
A. Biosecurity implementation
- Support the implementation of biosecurity measures on Assomption Island, particularly for construction materials, supplies, equipment, and personnel, in accordance with the Assomption biosecurity management plan.
- Ensure that thorough biosecurity checks are implemented to the highest standards for materials, supplies, equipment, and staff.
- Maintain a clear understanding of and compliance with biosecurity protocols from Mahé through to delivery on Assomption.
- Support the Conservation coordinator in coordination with contractors, operations staff, and designated Biosecurity Officers to ensure internal biosecurity processes operate smoothly and to maintain and improve biosecurity procedures on-site.
- Support writing of biosecurity reports for transportation of construction materials/staff and/or to Assomption.
- Report daily to Assomption Conservation Coordinator regarding biosecurity activities, plans and concerns.
- When required, support biosecurity measures on Mahé for staff and materials transport to Assomption and Aldabra.
B. Scientific monitoring and data collection
- Conduct biodiversity surveys required under the Notice of Acceptance and biodiversity assessment plan for Assomption.
- Where feasible, conduct baseline surveys and ongoing monitoring of environmental indicators (e.g., biodiversity, noise pollution, air quality, soil health, vegetation health, light pollution, water quality).
- Maintain accurate data and contribute to data management and scientific outputs.
- Support and guide research staff, visiting scientists, and volunteers involved in ecological fieldwork on Assomption.
C. Reporting and communication responsibilities
- Support the preparation of fortnightly environmental and biosecurity reports—covering vessel and flight arrivals, inspections, compliance updates, biodiversity monitoring, and minor incidents.
- Immediately report serious environmental or biosecurity incidents or regulation breaches to the Assomption Conservation Coordinator andthe Senior Environmental Monitoring Officer, SIF, with formal incident reports.
- Participate in daily team meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- BSc (preferred) in Environmental Science or related field, or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years of experience of implementing/supporting biosecurity measures on islands (essential)
- Minimum 3 years of experience in biodiversity monitoring or conservation work (essential)
- Strong report writing and data entry/management skills (essential)
SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
- Strong understanding of invasive species risks and biosecurity (essential)
- Strong understanding and passion for conservation and island biodiversity (essential)
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office, GPS/GIS tools, and basic data analysis (essential)
- Assertive, ethical, and professional in remote, high-responsibility environments
- Physically fit and prepared to work in isolated island conditions
- Detail-oriented and solutions-driven with sound judgment
